Get switched on to Athletics

CE Electric UK, the region’s electricity network operator, has partnered with Sportsmatch and England Athletics to create a unique scheme that aims to raise the standards of young athletes and coaches across Yorkshire and Humberside.

The aim of the Get Switched on to Athletics Performance Programme is to support athletes reaching their ultimate goal – to represent GB and England, and be a medalist on the podium at major championships focusing on the Olympics in London in 2012 and beyond.  CE Electric UK wants to ensure that athletics remains the nation’s favourite Olympic sport. By building the regional capacity of the sport and inspiring the next generation of coaches, the programme investment will be vital to developing more top athletes.

The Programme Objectives

England Athletics is working to raise standards in every event, across all age groups throughout the region. Get Switched on to Athletics is a key regional performance programme that will enable England Athletics to achieve this goal.  The England Athletics Regional Performance Programme will focus on 14-19 year olds and will be held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield – one of the finest high performance centres in the UK.  The programme will be led by a team of regional and county Performance Coaches whose role will be to raise standards and develop their event across the region. In addition to this, they will be responsible for developing a network of event specific coaches that are accessible to athletes and clubs.

How can you get involved in athletics on a local level?

Athletics clubs across the region are always looking for people to help and volunteer at their club. There are many roles within a club that you could undertake from learning how to coach, officiating at events to administration roles such as secretary and treasurer. In addition to this clubs would welcome anyone into their club who could help with the day to day running on their club nights, organising children, managing the tuck shop to collecting fees from athletes. Volunteering is a very rewarding and our clubs value their volunteers, so you would be made to feel very welcomed into the sport.

For more information about volunteering please contact the region office or ring 0114 242 3831.
