Generation
With the introduction of the Feed In Tariff from April 2010, many people will be wanting to consider installing their own electricity generation. We have produced our own leaflet to give you advice on installing microgeneration and connecting it to our network. To access an online version of the leaflet, click the link at the foot of the page. Click here if you would like more information about the Feed In Tariff.
You must contact us if you propose to install or operate generating equipment, as the equipment could affect our network or require alterations to your connection. You should always use a recognised installer if you are planning to install generating equipment of any capacity.
The connection process varies with the size of generation equipment to be installed. The "Technical Guide to the Connection of Generation to the Distribution Network" (published by the Government in 2004 and to be updated shortly) provides a useful introduction.
Micro-generation up to 16 amps per phase (single installation)
In general, you will need our consent to connect generating equipment to our network. However, in the case of generation rated up to 16 amps per phase, consent is not needed provided:
-
You are only connecting one unit;
-
The equipment has protection which will disconnect from the mains supply automatically in the event of the loss of mains supply;
-
The installation complies with the current edition of BS 7671 (Requirements for Electrical Installations); and
-
Your installer notifies us before or at the time of commissioning the microgenerator in line with the requirements of the Engineering Recommendation G83/1. This document can be obtained from the Energy Networks Association (ENA). Please click here for a link to their site. These are recommendations for the connection of small-scale embedded generators, up to 16amps per phase in parallel with a public low-voltage distribution networks.
For each connection, an Installation Commissioning Confirmation form must be completed and submitted to us at the following address:
Embedded Generation
CE Electric UK (NEDL/YEDL)
New York Road
Shiremoor
Newcastle upon Tyne

Micro-generation up to 16 amps per phase (more than one installation)
If you are connecting more than one unit, you will need to apply in advance for a connection even if all units are less than 16 amps per phase. You should contact our Network Connections Enquiry Management Centre (click here for contact details). You will be asked to use this form and send it to the address indicated.
Generation > 16 amps per phase
Anyone wishing to install embedded generators over 16 amps per phase should complete the application form, available from the link below.
