Preparing for Mother Nature

With the number of avoidable winter deaths standing at more than 25,000 nationally each year, we are warning elderly and vulnerable customers about the absolute necessity to be properly prepared for the possibility of power interruptions caused by severe winter weather.  Up to 30% more people die across our regions during the winter months, many of which could be avoided if people were better prepared.

We do everything within our power to keep people on supply, but it would be unrealistic to assume that interruptions to your supply are never going to happen, especially for our customers who live in rural communities.  We are urging families, friends and neighbours to keep a close eye on those most at risk.

If power is interrupted:
  • Switch off all electrical appliances
  • Leave a light on so you know when power is restored
  • Check to see if your neighbours are OK
  • Keep a blanket near you
  • Wrap up warm
  • Keep one room warm and stay in it
How CE Electric UK prepares for winter:

This year we have invested more than £130 million updating and replacing our assets (including overhead power lines).

We are using helicopters to check our network of overhead lines to pinpoint any areas that might need action, whether that is to repair or replace equipment or cut back vegetation growing into them.

Staff are on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We are equipped with the latest technology to locate problems and restore power as quickly as possible.

Despite all our efforts, severe weather can sometimes still cause power interruptions. Shown below are a few tips to make sure you have everything you need should this happen to you:
  • Have a battery powered radio tuned into a local radio station
  • Keep a torch handy (safer than candles)
  • When using an alternative form of heating or lighting, use it safely
